DRIVing Livelihoods, Kitui County Embraces Innovative Livestock Project

In a significant stride towards bolstering the resilience of pastoral communities, Kitui County has pledged its unwavering commitment to the De-Risking Inclusion and Value Enhancement (DRIVE) project. The morning’s meeting, spearheaded by Kitui Governor H.E Julius Malombe and PS Jonathan Mueke alongside the DRIVE team, epitomized the two governments dedication to revolutionizing the livestock sector.

Governor Malombe’s assurance of full engagement and support underscores the pivotal role counties play in the success of initiatives like DRIVE. With the backing of local leadership, the project gains momentum, ensuring its impact resonates deeply within communities.

The DRIVE project, funded by the World Bank, heralds a new era for pastoralists in the Country. By mitigating adverse drought risks and providing viable solutions, DRIVE aims to invigorate livelihoods and foster economic prosperity. Already making remarkable strides in 12 ASAL counties under the astute leadership of PS Jonathan Mueke, DRIVE stands as a beacon of hope for pastoral economies.

With over 108,694 pastoralists already enrolled in livestock insurance, the project’s tangible impact is palpable. Over a five-year period, the Ksh 16.08B initiative is poised to benefit 125,000 pastoral households, offering financial interventions and nurturing resilience.

The project’s multifaceted approach encompasses two pivotal components. Firstly, through a suite of financial services including index-based livestock insurance, savings incentives, and financial education, DRIVE enhances financial inclusion and resilience. Secondly, by mobilizing private investments into livestock value chains and facilitating trade, the project amplifies market access, thereby boosting economic opportunities for pastoralists.

As DRIVE extends its reach to Kitui County, a critical activity unfolds – the delineation of Unit Area Insurances (UAIs) tailored to the county’s unique ecological and climatic conditions. This participatory process, involving local experts and community stakeholders, ensures accurate mapping and localization of interventions, setting the stage for sustainable development.

In embracing the DRIVE project, Kitui County charts a course towards prosperity, where the resilience of pastoral communities becomes synonymous with progress. Through collaboration and innovation, the journey towards driving livelihoods forward begins.
